India achieved independence in 1947, ending nearly two centuries of colonial rule, but it was accompanied by the Partition of the subcontinent. This led to the creation of two separate nations and caused large scale migration, violence, and humanitarian crises. Millions were displaced as people moved across newly drawn borders. Despite these challenges, independent India began building a democratic framework under the Constitution of India. The period marked both the pain of division and the beginning of self governed political and social reconstruction.
